“I didn’t think we’d win,” said Andrew Lacy, a 26-year-old New York man.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling.
I’m still a bit emotional, but it’s amazing that we did.”
The men’s gold medal was the first of its kind in British Olympic history.
It also marked the third time a British athlete has won gold at the London Olympics.
“This is one of the great things about this sport, it’s so well organized, and you’re competing in your home country and people know you, and they follow you around,” Lacy said.
“I’m just thrilled to have it.”
The team’s captain, Mark Wilson, was also in tears.
“You just go out there, you go out on the boat and you can do whatever you want, you’re the best, you’ve got the best gear, you get to win every single day,” Wilson said.
The men won gold medals in all three events: the men’s longboard and women’s rowing, and their second-place finish in longboard, as well as silver in the women’s 10-meter diving, was the most since they won gold in London in 2014.
They finished third in the men and fourth in the overall medal count.
“They were fantastic,” Lacey said.
“(I was) just ecstatic to get a medal.
We’ve all had our moments and you just go through it, and we were happy to do it.”
A silver medal was a disappointment for the women, who were second in the rowing and third in all four events.
They lost to Japan in the individual medley and fourth-place finishers, Sweden and Brazil, finished sixth and seventh in the longboard.
They won bronze in the 10-metre diving, their first gold medal in that event.
The team will not be going to Rio this summer, but will be competing in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
“We’ve had so many wonderful memories, I’ve got lots of memories of the last few years, but I don’t want to get into it too much,” Lody said.
“We’re really looking forward to Rio, and this is a fantastic opportunity to have a great medal in our first Olympics,” said Sarah Hutton, a member of the team.
The men and women are expected to win the womens 10-kilometer event, which starts Saturday and will culminate in a medal round.
Hutton said she is hopeful that the medals in the short-track and longboard events will give them a chance to qualify for Rio.
The gold medals for the men, the roving and longboarding events will be awarded Monday in a ceremony at the home of the London Organising Committee. ___
