A year ago, Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester City, and Liverpool were among the teams who were linked with a possible move for Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.
However, the club’s decision to sign Luis Suarez, the world’s most expensive player, ended any interest.
At the same time, the signing of Neymar, Neymar’s Brazilian teammate and top-flight hero, brought a new level of excitement to the title race.
Now, with the new year upon us, it is no longer possible to ignore the prospect of another title challenge for the Premier League, and that means a major boost for those teams with young stars.
The most impressive aspect of this new season for young players is that the Premier Leagues are now more competitive, and not just with other European leagues, but with the best clubs in the world.
Barcelona’s Messi has been in the top five of scoring for the last three years, with just one goal and no assists in that time.
Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo has been the best player in the league this season with eight goals and 11 assists.
Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney has scored six times in 12 games, the most of any United player in his prime.
Liverpool’s Luis Suarez has won the Golden Boot award for most goals in the Premier Football League, with 15.
Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy has played in all of Leicester City’s league matches, with six goals and seven assists.
The Premier League is currently ranked fourth in terms of goals scored and assists, with a goal per game average of 2.5, but it has been ranked last in terms in goals scored, goals conceded, and goals conceded per game.
These stats, while not bad for a title challenger, don’t do justice to the talent in this league.
In the past two seasons, only two teams have finished with more goals than the Premier leagues top five, Tottenham and Liverpool.
Chelsea and Manchester City are the only other teams to have won the title at the end of each season.
However, there is no doubt that this year is going to be the year that the top two teams in the table will be crowned champions, and it is up to all of the young players in the English league to get the best out of their talent and to show that they can compete for trophies and trophies again.
